Supplementary Unemployment Benefit Plan Eligibility

All SUB contributions made on your behalf will be credited to your SUB account. As soon as $165 has accumulated in your account, you will be eligible to receive supplementary unemployment benefits provided:

  • During any week for which you are requesting benefits, you were available for work but were unable to obtain employment or you were receiving sickness benefits under the EI program , and
  • You were not on vacation, or receiving income benefits under the Workplace Safety Insurance Act, or offered employment by an Employer within the jurisdiction of Local 46 for at least two consecutive days, and
  • With respect to such claim period, you
    • were registered at and had reported to an employment office maintained by the federal government and had not refused to accept any suitable employment, and
    • had received or were eligible to receive, but for the waiting period, unemployment or sickness benefits under the Employment Insurance Act, and
    • had appeared personally and reported (with your employment record) to the Dispatch Office of Local 46 at 936 Warden Avenue, Scarborough, Ontario M1L 4C9 immediately prior to the period for which you are applying if your claim is related to unemployment (you will not be entitled to claim SUB benefits for any period of unemployment prior to registering as being out of work for SUB benefits), or
    • have applied for short term disability benefits under the health plan if your claim is related to sickness (you will not be entitled to claim SUB benefits for any period of sickness prior to filing your short term disability claim), and
    • have submitted the EI benefit statement, cheque stub or printout from Services Canada showing the weekly period and amount paid by EI, as well as the out-of-work slip, to the Benefits Office. Bank statements showing a direct deposit do not contain sufficient information and cannot be used.

Apprentices — As soon as $110 has accumulated in your account, you will be eligible to receive supplementary unemployment benefits. You must register with the Local 46 office and provide the Benefits Office with

  • a letter from the Local 46 office verifying that you are an eligible apprentice, and
  • a EI benefit statement, cheque stub or printout from Services Canada showing the weekly period and amount paid by EI. Bank statements showing a direct deposit are not sufficient and cannot be used.
